Nervous About Joining a Gym? What to Expect at Your First Women’s Fitness Class
Starting Is Often the Hardest Part
Walking into a gym for the first time can feel intimidating. You may worry that everyone else will be fitter, stronger or more coordinated. You may wonder whether you will know what to do, whether you will be able to keep up or whether people will be watching you.
Those concerns are completely understandable. Many women at Body Blast Fitness Studio once felt exactly the same way. You do not have to become fit before you begin. The purpose of joining a supportive gym is to receive the instruction, encouragement and structure that help you get started.
Before Your First Class
Choose a class that sounds comfortable and arrive a few minutes early. Not sure how to choose? Message or text us. We are here to help.
Let your trainer know that it is your first visit. You can also share any injury, limitation or movement that concerns you.
Wear comfortable clothing and supportive athletic shoes. Bring water and give yourself permission to learn. No one expects you to know the exercises before class begins.
Your Trainer Will Guide You
Every class at Body Blast is trainer led. Your trainer explains the movements, demonstrates proper technique and helps you choose an appropriate starting option.
If weights are used, you will not be expected to know how heavy you should lift. We can help you select a manageable weight and adjust it as you become more confident. You will also receive cues throughout class to help you improve your form.
You Do Not Have to Keep Up With Anyone Else
There is no competition at Body Blast. The woman beside you may use a different weight, a different range of motion or a different version of the exercise. That does not mean either person is working harder.
Your workout should meet your body where it is today. You control your pace, your weight and your intensity. Progress happens gradually as you become stronger and more comfortable.
What If You Need a Modification?
Many women have old injuries, joint discomfort, limited mobility or movements that simply do not feel right. Tell your trainer. We offer free one on one assistance to help members find safer or more comfortable alternatives.
Exercise should be challenging, but pain is not a requirement. Medical concerns and new or worsening pain should always be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Give Yourself Time to Feel Comfortable
Your first class is not a test. It is an introduction. You may need time to learn class names, exercises and equipment. With each visit, the unfamiliar becomes more familiar.
The women around you are not there to judge you. They are working on their own goals, and many remember what it felt like to be new.
Try the Gym Before Making a Decision
A single class may not show you everything a gym has to offer. A trial run allows you to experience several instructors and class styles before deciding what fits you best.
Come as you are. No experience is necessary, and there is never any pressure to join.
