Can I Join a Fitness Class If I Have an Injury or Physical Limitation? A Limitation Does Not Automatically Exclude You

Many women assume they cannot attend a group fitness class because of knee discomfort, a shoulder problem, limited mobility, a previous injury or another physical limitation.

Sometimes a class or a particular movement may not be appropriate. In many situations, however, an exercise can be modified so that you can participate more comfortably. The key is communication and appropriate guidance.

Speak With Your Healthcare Provider First

A fitness trainer does not diagnose injuries or replace medical care. If you have a new injury, unexplained pain, worsening symptoms or medical restrictions, speak with your healthcare provider before beginning or changing your exercise routine.

If you have received instructions or restrictions from a healthcare professional, share the relevant information with your trainer so your exercise options can respect those boundaries.

Tell Your Trainer Before Class

Arrive early and explain which movements or positions are uncomfortable. Be specific when possible. Saying that your knee hurts during deep bending is more useful than simply saying that your knee is bad.

Your trainer may suggest a reduced range of motion, lower impact, lighter resistance, different equipment or an alternative movement.

Modification Is Not the Same as Doing Less

A modification changes the exercise so it is more appropriate for your body. It does not make your effort less valuable.

One woman may perform a squat through a deeper range while another uses a chair and a smaller range. One woman may lift overhead while another chooses a shoulder-friendly variation. Both can work with purpose and make progress.

You Remain in Control of Your Workout

You are always allowed to reduce your weight, decrease your range of motion, slow the pace or take a break. A trainer can guide you, but you are the person experiencing the movement in your body.

Challenging effort can be part of exercise. Sharp, sudden or worsening pain should not be treated as something you must push through.
