How Do GLP-1 Medications Work?

Last week on Body Blast Fitness Studio Taunton, we learned that your body naturally produces a hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) every time you eat. This hormone helps regulate hunger, fullness, and blood sugar.
This week, let’s look at how GLP-1 medications work—and how they differ from the natural hormone your body already makes.
Your Body Continues to Make Its Own GLP-1
One of the biggest misconceptions is that taking a GLP-1 medication replaces or shuts down your body’s natural GLP-1.
It doesn’t.
Your intestines continue to release natural GLP-1 after meals just as they always have.
The challenge is that your natural GLP-1 is broken down very quickly by an enzyme called DPP-4. Within minutes, most of it is gone, so its effects are relatively short-lived.
What Makes the Medication Different?
GLP-1 medications don’t make your natural GLP-1 last longer.
Instead, they introduce a GLP-1 receptor agonist—a molecule designed to activate the same receptors as your natural GLP-1 but resist being broken down by DPP-4.
Because it stays active much longer, it continues sending signals that can:
• Increase feelings of fullness
• Slow stomach emptying
• Reduce appetite
• Improve blood sugar regulation
Many of the commonly prescribed medications are taken only once a week because they remain active in the body for several days.
They Don’t Burn Fat Directly
It’s important to understand what these medications do—and what they don’t do.
GLP-1 medications do not directly burn fat or “speed up” your metabolism.
Weight loss occurs mainly because many people eat less due to reduced hunger and increased fullness. Creating a calorie deficit is still what drives weight loss.
Healthy Habits Still Matter
Whether someone chooses to take a GLP-1 medication or not, the foundations of good health remain the same:
Eat enough protein to help preserve muscle.
Strength train regularly to support muscle and bone health.
Eat fiber-rich whole foods.
Stay physically active.
Prioritize good sleep.
These habits support overall health regardless of medication use.
What We Still Don’t Know
GLP-1 medications have shown meaningful benefits for many people with obesity and type 2 diabetes, particularly when prescribed appropriately and combined with lifestyle changes.
At the same time, these medications are relatively new for chronic weight management, and researchers continue to study their long-term effects, including what happens after years of use and after the medication is discontinued.
As with any medication, there are potential benefits, risks, and side effects. The decision to use one should always be made with a qualified healthcare provider after discussing an individual’s health history and goals.
The Bottom Line
Your body already has a remarkable system for helping regulate hunger and blood sugar.
GLP-1 medications are designed to enhance that system by activating the same receptors with a longer-lasting signal—they do not replace or stop your body’s natural GLP-1 production.
Whether someone chooses medication or not, lasting health depends on building sustainable habits. Nutrition, strength training, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep remain essential for maintaining muscle, supporting metabolic health, and improving long-term well-being.
