If you’ve recently started feeling “off,” you’re not alone.
Many women in their 40s and 50s notice changes in their body long before their periods stop. You may be experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, trouble sleeping, brain fog, weight gain around your midsection, or simply not feeling like yourself anymore.
The good news is this: these changes are common, and understanding what’s happening is the first step toward feeling better.
At Body Blast Fitness Studio, a women’s fitness studio in Taunton, MA, we believe that knowledge is just as important as exercise. As an RN-owned fitness studio, our goal is to help women understand their bodies while building strength, improving health, and gaining confidence through every stage of life.
What Is Menopause?
Menopause is a natural stage of life that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years. It is officially diagnosed after you have gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period.
Although many people use the word “menopause” to describe several years of hormonal changes, menopause is actually just one point in time. The entire transition includes three stages:
Perimenopause
Menopause
Postmenopause
Each stage brings different hormonal changes and symptoms.
Stage One: Perimenopause
Perimenopause often begins in a woman’s 40s, although some women notice changes in their late 30s.
During this stage, estrogen and progesterone levels begin to fluctuate. These hormonal shifts can lead to symptoms that may seem unrelated at first.
Common perimenopause symptoms include:
Irregular periods
Weight gain, especially around the abdomen
Hot flashes
Night sweats
Mood changes
Anxiety
Brain fog
Poor sleep
Fatigue
Lower energy
Joint aches
Reduced muscle mass
Increased hunger or food cravings
Many women assume these symptoms are simply part of getting older. In reality, changing hormones often play a significant role.
Stage Two: Menopause
A woman reaches menopause after going 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period.
At this point, estrogen levels have declined significantly. Some symptoms improve, while others may continue for several years.
Many women experience:
Hot flashes
Sleep disturbances
Vaginal dryness
Changes in metabolism
Loss of muscle
Reduced bone density
Increased risk of osteoporosis
Changes in cholesterol and heart health
Stage Three: Postmenopause
Postmenopause begins after menopause and continues for the rest of a woman’s life.
While hot flashes may gradually improve, maintaining muscle, bone density, heart health, and metabolic health becomes even more important.
This is where regular exercise and good nutrition can make a tremendous difference.
How Exercise Can Help During Menopause
Research consistently shows that regular physical activity is one of the most effective lifestyle strategies for improving overall health during menopause.
Strength training can help:
Preserve muscle mass
Support healthy metabolism
Improve bone density
Enhance balance
Increase strength for everyday activities
Improve insulin sensitivity
Support healthy weight management
Reduce the risk of falls as we age
Cardiovascular exercise supports heart health, while mobility work and stretching can improve flexibility and reduce stiffness.
Nutrition Matters Too
Nutrition is about much more than counting calories.
Eating enough protein helps preserve muscle, while high-fiber foods support digestive health, help regulate blood sugar, and can improve fullness between meals.
A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats supports overall health during menopause.
Small, consistent habits often lead to the biggest long-term improvements.
