Week 1 Menopause Symptoms: Hot Flashes and Night Sweats Explained

If you are a woman in your 40s or 50s and suddenly find yourself feeling overheated for no apparent reason, waking up soaked in sweat, or constantly adjusting the thermostat while everyone else feels comfortable, you are not alone.

Hot flashes and night sweats are the most common symptoms of menopause. While they are often joked about, they are very real and can have a significant impact on your daily life, your sleep, and your overall health.

At Body Blast Fitness Studio in Taunton, we believe that understanding your body is the first step toward feeling your best. This is the first article in our Menopause Symptom Series where we explore the science behind menopause and share practical ways to help you stay healthy and active.

What Are Hot Flashes?

A hot flash is a sudden feeling of intense heat that usually starts in the chest, neck, or face and spreads throughout the body. Many women also experience redness of the skin, heavy sweating, a rapid heartbeat, and sometimes chills once the hot flash passes.

A hot flash can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes and may happen several times a day.

What Are Night Sweats?

Night sweats are simply hot flashes that occur while you are sleeping. They often wake women multiple times throughout the night, leaving clothing and bedding soaked with sweat.

Unfortunately, the biggest problem is often not the sweating itself. It is the lack of quality sleep that follows.

Poor sleep can affect nearly every aspect of your health.

Why Do They Happen?

As estrogen levels begin to decline during perimenopause and menopause, the brain becomes much more sensitive to even small changes in body temperature.

The area of the brain that regulates body temperature starts reacting as though your body is overheating, even when it is not.

Your body responds by trying to cool itself through increased blood flow to the skin and sweating. This creates the familiar feeling of a hot flash.

What Can Help?

Regular strength training

Daily physical activity

Maintaining a healthy body weight

Eating a diet rich in whole foods

Limiting alcohol if it triggers symptoms

Managing stress

Keeping your bedroom cool at night

Talking with your healthcare provider if symptoms become severe

Exercise will not eliminate hot flashes overnight, but regular physical activity has been shown to improve sleep quality, mood, energy, muscle strength, and overall quality of life during menopause.
